Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, commonly sold as a blooming gift plant, is a tropical houseplant. The flowers last for a long time and while it is blooming the plant prefers cool room temperatures and an evenly moist soil. It is most often discarded after bloom because it is quite difficult to get it to rebloom. To rebloom, it requires a specific number of hours of light vs. dark in order to set buds. Alternatively you can just grow it as a foliage plant.

When it finishes blooming, provide it with full sun and do not overwater; water and then let the soil dry before you water it again.

To encourage rebloom, you will need to provide it with about six weeks of controlled lighting (short days) so that it is in total darkness for 13 hours every night and still in very bright light during the day. If you begin this treatment on September first, for example, you should see blooms for the holidays.
