|I've been patiently waiting for my Merrill Magnolia to bloom and I'm wondering why it buds green leafs with out flowers? Could you please help with this? I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong?
|This magnolia should bloom at a young age and is considered to be free flowering. If it seems otherwise healthy then a common reason is pruning at the wrong time of year; any pruning or shaping would be done in early summer after the bloom period to avoid removing flower buds. Also, it is possible that oscillating temperatures and late frosts in the spring have destroyed the flower buds prior to their opening. Strong cold winter winds could also damage flower buds. Finally, in order to set flowers the tree does need to be growing vigorously. It does best in a rich, evenly moist yet well drained soil in a location out of wind both winter and summer. I hope this helps you troubleshoot.|
