|Hope you can help. I have two Buddlea bushes in the back garden which have been there for nearly 3 years so are quite large. The only problem is they seem really "twiggy and bare" at the bottom and middle and only seem to have leaves and buds on the end of the top of the bush. Can you possibly advise me on what I can do to make the bush look greener and healthy all over.
|These plants bloom only on new growth, and can become quite large and ungainly over time. In colder climates winterkill helps to prune them back, in warmer climates most gardeners will trim them back to within a foot or so of the ground each spring to stimulate vigorous new growth. The new branch tips can be pinched back a time or two as they come in to help keep the plant dense. I think regular pruning as described would help.
