It's me again- Last year I planted 3 Vine Maples underneath the canopy of some Douglas firs. The firs are limbed high enough so the Maples are getting plenty of water. The probelm is that the leaves on the Vine Maples are starting to yellow at the tips inward. They had very good vigouous new group earlier in the spring. It appear to be happening to all three of them at about the same rate. Is it a problem with some sort of mineral deficiency or something else. Please let me know. Thanks, KB |
I suspect the maples are competing with the firs for both water and nutrients. The firs have more extensive root systems and are probably winning the battle. You can feed your maples during the growing season with a complete fertilizer (amounts according to label directions), by broadcasting the recommended amount under the canopies of your maples and lightly scratching it in to the soil surface. Your firs will benefit from the fertilizer, but your maples should get their fair share, too. A few weeks after fertilizing your maples should look healthier. Hope so! |
