For various reasons, I did not fertilize my lawn yet and it is now early December. Can I still do it and what is the best type of fertilizer to use for the grass in the winter?

I'd wait until spring to fertilize. If you spread fertilizer on frozen ground, it may simply run off when the snow melts (contributing to water pollution problems).

However, if you have not had your soil tested, I would advise you to do that in the spring. That way you'll know exactly what to put down for your lawn to become the showcase of the neighborhood! Go to your University Extension Office (ph # 914/677-8223) and get a soil testing kit. The directions will be included. It is very simple-and VERY worthwhile!
