Redbud (Cercis) develops fall color after the first frost. If you live in a mild winter area of California, redbud foliage may not turn in your garden. Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' and Cercis canadensis 'White Cloud' are both eastern redbuds, needing pronounced winter chill to produce a profuse display of flowers. The foliage is rich green, turning light yellow or red in the fall, if temperatures dip sharply. Cercis occidentalis, the western redbud, has blue-green leaves, which turn light yellow or red after the first frost.
