Peonies are traditionally moved only if it is absolutely necessary since they are very long lived and tend to sulk for several years after transplanting. This is best done in the fall.

Deciduous shrubs such as the Miss Kim lilac can be moved in the late summer, late fall after the leaves drop, or very early spring.

In both cases, take as large a root ball as possible and replant immediately. Take care to water the plant deeply the day before you dig it and then water it in well at planting time to settle any air pockets.

Afterwards, water as needed to supplement rainfall to keep the soil slightly moist but not sopping wet until the ground freezes. The following season, water as you would a newly planted plant as well while they become established.
