I was told not to use Wichita Junipers for a hedge, because where they touch would turn brown and die off, is this true.

Junipers grow best in an open situation where they receive full sun on all sides. They will shade each other out somewhat in a closely planted crowded hedge situation. Arborvitae (Thuja) is often used instead for a similarly upright evergreen hedge because the plants will meld together better when they eventually grow close.
