| I bought one of your goldflame honeysuckles recently. I transferred it from a 1 to a 5 gallon container. Some leaves burnt in the recent heat wave and I pinched them off and the new growth is doing fine. QUESTION: WIll this plant do OK in a container? I live in a mountainous part of Santa Cruz county and the deer are a constant problem. How can I maximize the plant's performance in a container? THANKS |
| Your honesuckle will be happy planted in a container, for a few years, at least. It will be dependent upon you to feed and water regularly because the roots cannot venture out to find needed moisture and nutrients. Be sure to water as often as needed to keep the soil from drying out, and fertilize every 3-4 weeks with a diluted liquid fertilizer (follow label directions). When roots begin to grow out through the drainage holes of the container you'll need to replant into a larger container, or unpot and do some root-pruning, then repot into the old pot. If it's too rootbound for too long, performance will suffer. Honeysuckle isn't necessarily on the "deer most preferred" plant list, but if they're hungry enough, deer will eat most anything. |
