|I am a new student to horticulture and have enjoyed your product in my gardens along with your extensive website. My question is an easy one, I would like to know Monrovias definition of horticulture? This is for a class assignment, and your attention to this question would be appreciated.
|While your question might seem like an easy one, the answer is quite involved! Horticulture has its origin in Latin; hortus meaning garden and colere meaning to cultivate. The science of horticulture involves the intensive cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants. Horticulturally cultivated plants are used for food, medicinal purposes or aesthetic gratification.
There are many subdivisions of horticulture: Pomology (the culture of fruits), Olericulture (growing vegetables), Floriculture (flowers and houseplants), Landscape Horticulture (the use of plants for outdoor beautification) and Home Horticulture (growing plants in your yard, on balconies, rooftops and indoors). Greenhouse and Nursery Production would, obviously, supply local nurseries with ornamental stock for purchase by the public, and that's what Monrovia does!
Hope you continue to enjoy your studies in horticulture!
