| Although the southern magnolia as a species grow naturally from seeds in the wild, keep in mind that the seed you have from the "Little Gem" will not reproduce a plant identical to the one you took it from. If you want to experiment, you would need to harvest ripe seed and then cold stratify the seed for three to six months in the refrigerator (place seed and a small amount of barely damp vermiculite in a closed container or sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator), or simply plant it outdoors to winter outside and then watch for germination in the spring. An easier method of propagation might be to take tip cuttings for rooting in the summer time. Enjoy your magnolia! |
