We would like to plant Redwoods as a screening aid to block the neighbors pool. We are thinking of using the 'Soquel' variety. Will these trees do well here or is there a better variety? We are also considering Little Rascal Holly or Goshiki Compact Grape Holly as an underplanting. Are they compatable with Redwoods or can you suggest something better? We are zone 9, Sunset zone 14.
Thank You!

'Soquel' is a handsome tree, with blue-tinged green foliage on horizontal branches with upturned tips. For your particular situation I'd recommend 'Los Altos'. It produces a thick canopy of dark green leaves on horizontal, arching branches. For even more garden interest, you might consider 'Majestic Beauty'. It has dense blue-green foliage on pendulous branchelets.

The compact grape holly will provide an attractive understory to your redwoods. The foliage is a blue-green which will complement the tree foliage and look striking against the red-brown trunks of the trees. Good luck with your new landscape!
