In my experience it is almost always better to plant outdoors than to try to keep a plant indoors over the winter. Container grown plants can be planted any time the ground is not frozen, although spring and fall would be the preferred times. Bare root plants are usually available only in the spring, however a few are occasionally offered in the fall. These should be planted right away. Loosen and prepare the soil, plant, water well, and then apply several inches of organic mulch. Check to make sure the soil stays evenly moist (but not sopping wet) up until it becomes frozen. Enjoy your new fern!
