We would like to plant a maple tree to help shade our back patio. We want to be sure that the roots won't grow too quickly toward our basement foundation.

Unfortunately, most maples develop into very large trees and are thus not suited for planting close to a house because of their size. Instead, you might consider some smaller trees (a small tree runs to between twenty and thirty feet mature size) for along the patio such as our native redbud or one of the flowering crabapples (newer varieties have been developed that are disease resistant and hold their apples.) Your local county extension and/or professionally trained nursery personnel may also have some suggestions based on more detailed knowledge of the specific growing conditions in your yard where you want to plant the tree. Good luck with your patio planting!
