|I would like to plant vines along my wire fence that I have on the side of my property to give me some privacy. What vines stay green all year round. Or should I say What vines keep there leaves all year round. I want the vines to still be green or have there leaves in the winter time.
I live in New york state. I think I'm zone 4 or 5. Thank you.
|Unfortunately, in your cold winter area, there isn't a vine I can think of that will give you a reliable evergreen presence. The typical standbys, English ivy (Hedera helix) and the half shrub/half vine Euonymous fortunei, would probably not be hardy enough exposed on a wire fence (especially if it is in full sun) although they might do well enough on a building where there would be some shelter and some residual heat. You might consult with your local nursery personnel and see if they have any other suggestions based on a more detailed knowledge of the planting site.
Alternatively, you might consider a wooden lattice fencing added to the wire to try to provide some all season visual protection, then grow any one of the many deciduous vines on that for better coverage during the summer months.
I'm really sorry I can't be more encouraging.
