We have a dark corner - L-shaped area near house, under overhanging eaves. Area is 5 feet square. Nearby plantings are Japanese. Can you recommend shrubs or dwarf trees which might adapt to this area?

Thanks in advance

I find that trees and shrubs with variegated foliage help brighten a dark corner. As long as there's a reasonable amount of light (you can cast a shadow with your hand), you can plant Abutilion (flowering maple), Leucothoe, Pieris, or Aucuba japonica (Japanese aucuba). Abutilion, Aucuba and Leucothoe all have variegated foliage; Pieris has red-tinged young foliage which turns green with age. Hope one of these suggestions appeals to you!
