Italian cypress, including 'Swane's Golden', typically grow to 60' tall and 5-10' wide. Planting only 3' away from a building will not provide adequate room for top growth. Roots generally radiate out about one and one-half times the diameter of a plant - expect roots to travel 10-15' out from the center of the tree. You might want to consider a smaller evergreen for the site. Thuja (arborvitae) occidentalis 'Yellow Ribbon' or 'Hetz Midget' generally remain only 2'-3' wide and grow 15-20' tall. Either of these would make a good substitute for 'Swane's Golden'.
