Lagerstroemia (crape myrtle) has a nice growth habit (from 8' to 10' tall and wide) and the brightly colored, papery textured flowers remind me of a cottage garden. You might also consider goldenchain tree (Laburnum), Arbutus (strawberry tree), or a crabapple. Each produces spring color and filtered shade throughout the growing season. Enjoy your new garden!
