Hello,

My wife and I want to purchase some of your roses, but we have a question before we do. Our zone is 9 and we have been averaging about 85 degrees every day. My question is, if we buy roses, is it too hot to plant them now or do we have to wait till next year? Thank you in advance.

It's less stressful to plant if they are planted in the spring or fall when temperatures are cool and rainfall abundant, but if you provide the right care, you can transplant at most anytime of year. Roses respond best when planted during their dormant season, but if you're planting now, you'll want to maintain consistent soil moisture to help the roots become established. Prepare the planting hole by incorporating some organic matter (to help retain moisture), and plant late in the day so the plant has a chance to settle in before having to deal with hot sunshine. Try to provide some protection from afternoon sun for a few days after transplanting by erecting a temporary trellis or frame for some burlap or shade cloth. Water deeply once each week to ensure adequate moisture reaches the entire root system, and topdress the soil with an organic mulch to slow evaporation. Taking these precautions will help your new roses settle in to their new homes. Best wishes with your new shrubs!
