Can you recommend a shrub (evergreen or flowering) for a hedgerow type look for the northside of the home. The area to be planted is 40' long by 5' deep and would prefer them low growing 2-3'so as not to grow up past a bank of windows. This area faces the river. Thanks!

I apologize for the delay in answering your question.

You might consider a hardy boxwood, such as 'Chicagoland Green', which grows 3 to 4 feet tall and as wide. This variety is rated hardy to zone 4. 'Green Mountain' is another good choice. Compact inkberry holly (Ilex glabra 'Compacta') is another good evergreen hedge plant.
Both of these require full to part sun.

Potentillas, such as Red Ace, have lovely flowers; they requires full sun.

P.J.M. Rhododendron is a slow grower, eventually reaching a height of 5 feet.

'Green Mound' alpine current is a low-growing shrub that tolerates moderate shade.

You might consider a mixed planting, which creates a more natural look -- and, unlike a formal hedge, it's less noticeable if you lose a plant.

Again, I apologize for the delay in responding.
