|I planted two Bridal Bouquet Abelias 2 years ago, in recommended conditions. Their growth isn't arching - it is more horizontal - like some of the viburnums. Given it's very flat and rangy shape, what is the best way to prune it and why is it doing this? It gets early afternoon - afternoon sun, so I know it's not the shade.
|As your plant matures it will take on a slightly more upright graceful, arching form. Wait until late winter or early spring and prune your abelia by cutting some of the stems down to ground level. The following year's growth will be more open and arching than the year before. As you prune in this manner over the years, you'll encourage a lovely, fountain shaped shrub.|
