|I have about an acre of land that is basically sand and
gravel, with just a little organic material in it. It is
very wet, with the water table just 2-3 inches down for
half the year. (It's located near my camp on a woodlot
in southwest Maine). What other kinds of extremely low maintenance flowering plants (probably wildflowers) will live and spread in that environment? (Desperate for some blues and reds).
|Prairie Moon Nursery is the place to look for the plants for your situation. They have an extensive list of plants that do well in "wet mesic" soils (wet during winter, spring and after rain, drying in summer). They even have a woodland mix for wet mesic soils. While you may not have the luxury of choosing colors because of the extreme growing conditions, at least there's something available that will tolerate them and perhaps even thrive!
