I just bought a Mystery Gardenia and I live in Washington State and I am curious to know if I can plant it outside or does it have to be planted in a planter and brought out in the Spring and brought back in in the fall? Our Winters are pretty mild here.

Thanks so much for your time.

Your plant is Gardenia jasminoides and is hardy to about 20F. It's unusual for temperatures to get below that in your maritime climate, but it's possible, so plant your gardenia outdoors in a somewhat protected area such as close to the house, preferrably under an eave. It should also be quite happy under some trees and next to other shrubs which will help protect it from ice and snow. Best wishes with your new gardenia!
