The best time to prune cherry trees is in late winter, before new growth appears. If you prune it now (mid-summer) it will ooze sap and produce new sprouts in a variety of places. If you prune it while it's dormant, there will be no sap to ooze, and the new growth will develop on the branches where you pruned. Best wishes with your cherry tree!
