|I have extensive Lavandula Dentata planted in full sun. How often should it be watered in summer (we have no rain in summer) and when and how should it be pruned or divided?|
|Although lavender is considered a drought-tolerant plant, it does need to be watered on a regular basis throughout the growing season. Water your plants deeply every week to 10 days (depending on the weather) by applying water slowly so it has a chance to percolate down and wet the entire root mass. Wait until the top 2" of soil dries out and then water thoroughly again. The main bloom season for your French lavender is spring through summer, but because of your mild weather it may bloom nearly year around. This makes deciding when to prune or divide a bit difficult. You can divide your plants in fall when the weather is cool, during the winter months, or in very early spring before flowerheads develop. By the same token, you can prune in late summer after the main flush of bloom is finished, or in early spring before flowering begins again.|
Enjoy your lavender!
