Purple fountain grass is considered an annual in your gardening region. Sometimes the roots will remain alive during the winter months, but it's rare. The best course of action is to wait until mid-spring; if new blades appear, your fountain grass has survived. If no new growth appears, dig and replace the plant.

Best wishes with your garden!
