In my experience hostas are not overly demanding for fertilizer. I like to use a topdressing of compost along with a natural mulch year round (about three inches thick) to help feed them gradually as it breaks down. You can also use a general purpose granular or slow release fertilizer with an analysis of 10-10-10 or similar proportions, apply it in the spring. Read and carefully follow the label instructions. For a more precise recommendation you would need to run some basic soil tests and then fertilize according to the results. Your local county extension should be able to help you with testing and interpreting the results.
