| I have a small yard which has many ant hills. I have been trying to get rid of some of them, a friend told me to use lime, the ants do not like the high PH levels. Is this true? Is limestone pellets harmful to my dog and or children playing in the yard? Maybe you know of another way to rid my yard of so many ant hills? Thanks, Julie |
| I am not sure how ants feel about lime but excess lime can certainly affect your soil pH and damage the lawn as a result, so I would not recommend using it to try to battle ants. In most cases this is a seasonal appearance of the ants and will naturally go away all on its own and you can rake out the ant hills if they look bad. The ants actually help aerate the soil and are a natural part of the soil life. As long as they are not coming into your home it should not be something to worry about, especially since we do not have fire ants in the northeast. On the other hand, sometimes there are so many ant tunnels that they can cause the soil to dry out and damage the roots of the sod as a result. If this is happening they can be controlled, for example by baiting. I would then suggest you work with a local lawn care professional who is aware of which products may legally be used in your state and how to apply them correctly and safely. |
