Healthy lawns are the result of ongoing care, but it's not so daunting a task that a homeowner with a good lawnmower can't achieve. For best performance, your lawn should be irrigated and fed regularly, and mowed as often as necessary to keep the grass blades 1 1/2" to 2" in length. Water deeply (one-inch per week) by applying water slowly so it has a chance to trickle down and wet the entire root mass. Fertilize 4 times a year (April, June, September and late November or early December) with a 3-1-2 ratio of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Check the fertilizer labels for amounts to use. Scout for weeds and remove them when they appear. A lush, healthy lawn will crowd out most weeds and shade the soil enough to keep weed seeds from germinating. If you find a few weeds, you can spot treat to eliminate them. Enjoy your lawn!
