we plants our climatis 3 yrs ago and they never gave us any flowers. they vines and leaves look great and makes a nice vine in front of the house but we planted them for the flowers. What can we do to make them start flowering |
Clematis vines can take several years to become rooted and established after planting before they begin to bloom to their potential. I would have expected to see one or two flowers though assuming they are growing well. One reason they may not flower is too little sunlight. They need about a half day of sun or very bright dappled light all day to bloom. In less sun their blooming will be reduced. The other thing that can happen is pruning at the wrong time. Depending on which kind of clematis you have it may bloom on old growth which would mean do not prune it in the spring but wait until after its normal flowering period. Other clematis bloom on new growth of the season and should be trimmed back early in the spring to encourage vigorous new growth and more blooms. If you are unsure, you could trim half of it back in the spring and leave the other half alone and see which one blooms better. I hope this helps. |
