How do you know what 'zone' you are in for buying and planting flowers. I am new to this gardening thing and don't know even the basics. Can you recommend a 'Gardening for dummies' book as well?

Your gardening zone is USDA zone 4, with averge winter lows of -30 to -20F. Your last frost of the season is between May 1-30 and the first frost of the season usually arrives between September 1-30. This gives you a short gardening season compared to other gardening zones, but you can still plant lots and lots of annuals and perennials for summer color. One of the best gardening resources is a book entitiled "Gardening for Dummies", published by IDG Books (ISBN 1-56884-644-4). Once you've read about gardening basics, you can branch out to the other "Dummies" series, including Annuals, Perennials, Flowering Bulbs, Roses, Lawn Care, etc. Most of these books can be found in libraries and they're filled with helpful advice, even for seasoned gardeners. Enjoy your new garden!
