How do I protect my basil plants from insects. Three plants was destroyed already by these pesky insects. They chew huge holes in the leaves.

Large holes in leaves can be caused by caterpillars or snails/slugs. They can be excluded by using a summer weight row cover. You could also try a repellent such as a garlic based spray. Since this is a food plant be sure to read and follow the label instructions carefully.
