Last summer I had 5yrds of soil delivered and raked over my lawn. This year I find it is covered with weeds. How can I rid my lawn of these weeds without killing the new grass?

There are several things you can do. One is to be sure that the pH and fertility levels are optimum for lawn grass growth. Then mow at the optimum height for your grass type to encourage dense growth and help shade out the weeds, especially annual weeds. Make sure to mow often often that you never remove more than at most one third of the length of the grass per mowing. Finally, you may need to treat some of the weeds, depending what kind they are. Your local county extension should be able to help you identify the weeds and recommend the best control method to use. They can also help you with soil tests and interpreting the results to make sure you are providing the right environment to encourage grass growth. Good luck with your lawn.
