Crocus grow from corms (bulb-like roots) which are planted in fall. Most crocuses flower in spring, but some bloom in the fall. These are very small plants with narrow, grass-like leaves and 1-3" long flower stems with 1-2" wide flowers. Most plants will take up less than six inches of garden space.
