Beebalm or Monarda needs a humus rich or organic soil meaning one that is amply supplied with organic matter such as compost. It also does best in full sun or at least a half day of direct sun, in a spot with good air circulation, and where the soil is evenly moist. Under a pine tree is probably not the best location for it as the pine tree will compete against it for light, air, moisture and nutrients. I hope this answers your question.
