| Roses need a location with full direct sun all day or for a bare minimum of at least six hours including the hour of noon. They need a spot with good air circulation. The soil should be evenly moist but well drained. If you have heavy clay based soil, planting on a slight slope or raised bed can be helpful. At planting, loosen the soil over a wide area and about the same depth as the root ball. Set the plant so that the graft union (if there is one) is several inches below the soil surface. This will help protect it during the cold winters. Replace the soil and firm it gently, water slowly and deeply to eliminate air pockets. Mulch over the disturbed area with several inches of organic mulch in a flat layer, do not allow it to touch the stems or canes. Prior to planting you might also want to run some basic soil tests to see if you need to add any other amendments such as fertilizer or lime. Your local county extension should be able to help you with the tests and interpreting the results. Your retailer may also have planting suggestions for you. |
