Snakes seem to enjoy the environment provided by leafy plantings, so your best planting would probably be a mowed lawn area running right up to the foundation. This would also enable you to see any approaching snakes more easily. Your local county extension should be able to help you learn to identify the local snakes so you can distinguish any that might be potentially dangerous. (The vast majority of snakes are not!) Snakes can actually be very helpful in a rural setting, they can help keep down the rodent population, for example, which limits the number of mice that could then try to shelter in your home or gnaw on your fruit trees in the winter.
