I would like to know what are the best varieties of fruit/nut trees to plant in a home orchard in East Tennessee. I have already contacted the local UT Agriculture Extension agency but did not receive adequate information regarding variety, cross-pollination, hardiness, supplier, etc.

This is a very complex question for such a limited Q&A format -- you could probably grow just about anything from apples to figs. Here are links to some fact sheets and other materials you may find helpful. You may also want to look at a book or two at the library or bookstore about home orchard management and small scale fruit and nut growing. Once you begin to narrow down your selections, and know the type of fruit and begin to winnow it down to a few cultivars you are considering, you may find that suppliers such as Raintree, Stark Brothers and Edible Landscaping for example can be specific and helpful in finalizing your choices.
