Cactus can be planted in spring, summer and fall, although spring and fall are less stressful. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of cactus, to choose from. Determine how big the mature cactus will get and make sure there is adequate room for it to expand in the landscape where you plan to put it. Thus, its spines aren't in the way, and you don't have to remove pads from prickly pear or cholla, for example, to keep them from impinging on walkways or stabbing folks! Some cactus are more frost tender than others, depending on where they originate, so they may need protection in winter. You can usually find this information on plant tags or in reference books. Good luck with your selections!
