Brown splotches on sod - Knowledgebase Question

I have rather new sod (November 04).
I noticed patches of brown in the sod.
The rest of the sod is green and beautiful.
The brown areas are irregular in shape and the grass is not tall in these areas.
I have also noticed a couple of very dark green areas.
We have watered regularly, etc.
The soil is clay and the sod is Fescue.
Can you give me any information on this?

Irregular brown areas in lawns can be caused by dog urine or failure of the sod to make good contact with the soil (resulting in death of the roots). Why not dig up one of the dead areas and check the roots. If they have penetrated into the soil, the spots are probably from urine; if the roots are dead, it's probably because they didn't make good contact with the underlying soil. The dark green areas indicate an overabundance of nitrogen - again, could be from dogs or could be the result of something organic beneath the soil is decomposing. Hope this background information is helpful!
