Fertilizing Bougainvillea - Knowledgebase Question

I just received a mother's day gift from my children from your company. It was a beautiful bougainvillea plant. They brought it about 150 miles to me and we immediately watered it profusely. Then it sat upon my porch for about 3 days and lost all its pink blossoms. It was a little windy. I am wondering where I made my mistake as it lost all its blossoms. Should I fertilize it?

Bougainvillea loses its flowers after a few weeks of colorful display but it will bloom again in about four weeks. Bougainvilleas go through this bloom cycle all through the year in mild winter climates but in your gardening zone you'll want to take your plant indoors in the fall, when nighttime temperatures reach about 50F. In the meantime, keep it watered well and fertilize every 2-3 weeks with a half-strength dilution of liquid fertilizer such as Miracle-Gro. Enjoy your new plant!
