| We bought a dappled willow two years ago. It is still only 1 foot high. It grows out but not up. In the winter ther area where it has been planted gets flooded. It survives and looks good in spring and summer it just isn't getting any bigger. It also is planted next to a tree that tends to spread its roots all around the willow. Should we move it? Why isn't it growing larger? If we move it what is the best way to do that? |
| Salix integra 'Hakura Nishiki' is a small growing shrubby willow. It does best in a sunny location with moist soil. Although it will tolerate average garden soil moisture levels, like all willows it prefers ample water. The root system of your willow should be well established by now so pruning might be all that's necessary to encourage some new growth. Try cutting back some of the stems to see if it will put out new growth. If, after a few weeks you see no change, it indicates the willow is struggling in its growing site and should be moved. Wait until this fall, when temperatures are cooler and rainfall abundant and there will be less transplant shock. Best wishes with your dappled willow! |
