I have been told that I should not put mulch against the house. I have noticed a few colonies of ants in the old mulch and have been told not put the mulch against that house? Is this true and if it is, how can I mulch the garden but not get it against the house?

It's true, ants like to live and hide in mulch material, which could put your house at risk if you pile it up against the siding or framing. You can still use mulch, just be sure to rake it away from the foundation every few weeks to check for ant colonies. Mulch against concrete foundations isn't as worrysome, but I'd still recommend raking it back every few weeks to check for ant colonies.
