| I purchased a nishiki tree last year it did not have any information with it . what kind of soil? how often should it be watered?
|This small tree or large shrub is a willow called Salix integra 'Hakura Nishiki.' It needs full sun to grow its best but will tolerate partial shade. Although it will tolerate average garden soil, it does best in evenly moist or even wet soil. To know if you need to water, dig into the soil with your finger. If it is still damp or wet you do not need to water yet. When you do water, water slowly and make sure it soaks down deep to encourage deep rooting. You should also use a layer of organic mulch several inches thick in a flat layer over the root area to help keep the soil moister. This plant will reach about 20 feet high and wide if left unpruned but you can maintain it in the 6 to 10 foot range by pruning it back very hard in the early spring. Enjoy!|
