I'm buying a mexican fan palm tree, but do not know how to plant it. How deep and wide the hole should I dig? Thanks.

Tadd,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. We are transitioning to a new Q&A system and your question was unfortunately lost in the transition. I have discovered it now and hope this reply is not too late to be of help.

Dig a hole a little wider than the root ball but no deeper. Don't plant the palm deeper than is was growing previously. Tamp the soil firmly around the roots as you add water to the planting hole. Build a berm around the tree trunk extending about 2 feet out in all directions to hold water and allow for a better soaking of the roots periodically. However keep the soil just moist, not soggy wet. If the tree is too tall to stand on its own you may also want to provide some temporary support for the trunk for the first six months to allow the tree time to establish some roots.

Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon!
