How do you tell the difference between mail and female

Since both plants flower, you'd need to compare the flowers of each. Female flowers have a swollen ovary, male flowers have only stamens (filaments with pollen sacs on top). If both a male and a female are within a reasonable distance of one another, the female will produce berries.
