Maple trees often have what is considered interesting bark scars and discolorations. I suspect that the trunk is showing a normal variation in bark color and is nothing to worry about. Sometimes the smallest nick becomes a scar which in subsequent years becomes calloused over and adds even more interest to the trunk. As long as you know the bark has not been actually peeled back (by humans or animals) then it's safe to assume the scarring is normal for your tree.
