I love lavateras but after they bloom one time they seem to peter out. Is it the heat, or do I have to pinch them after they bloom, or do I have to do successive plantings?

Lavateras will bloom all summer if you remove the dead flowers. (Leaving them on will signal the plant to put its energy into producing seeds instead of producing new blooms.) They will self-sow, so if you leave the last of the blooms on to produce seed at the end of the season, you'll have new plants in the same area next year.
