| My Butterfly Iris beds were thinned out this spring and they are not filling in very well at all. What can I fertilize with to increase the foliage and thicken the plants up so my beds will be fuller and greener? These beds are in the front of our home and serve as a green background for the back of our front beds. Karen Manske |
| The best time to divide Butterfly iris is in the fall. This gives the plants all winter to establish their roots so they are prepared to produce new foliage and flower stems the following spring. There's nothing you can do at this time to hurry your plants up - they'll just need to become re-established before they're capable of developing additional leaves. You can help matters along by keeping the soil moist (but not soggy wet) and just being patient with them. As soon as the roots are established they will produce lots of new foliage. |
