Surprsingly the best times to fertilize a lawn are in the fall and you might also fertilize in the spring if soil tests indicate a need for it. You might want to work with your county extension or garden center staff to run some soil tests and fertilize on the basis of the test results. Your county extension should also be able to help you work out a lawn care maintenance plan suited to your soil and the specific type of grass in your lawn. In the meantime, try to mow often enough that you are not removing more than one third of the height when you mow. Good luck with your lawn!
